Maritime boarding is one of the riskiest missions in special operations.

A team of 8 to 12 operators approaches a moving vessel at night. They come in fast from a rigid-hull inflatable boat or fast-rope from an MH-60S Seahawk. Within seconds, they own the deck. This is Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure — VBSS — the bread and butter of naval special warfare.

The January 2024 mission off Somalia put the spotlight on these skills.

Navy SEAL Team 3, supported by MH-60S helicopters and drones, boarded a dhow in the Arabian Sea. They found Iranian-made ballistic missile and cruise missile components hidden aboard — parts bound for Houthi forces in Yemen. It was the first such seizure by the U.S. Navy since 2019, and it showed how maritime interdiction has shifted from counter-piracy to counter-proliferation.

The gear makes the difference between a clean takedown and a firefight.

SEALs on VBSS missions run the Mk 18 Mod 1 carbine — short-barreled for tight shipboard corridors — fitted with suppressors, PEQ-15 infrared lasers, and SU-230/PVQ day optics. Maritime loadouts add waterproof communications, buoyant grab bags, and corrosion-proof weapon coatings. Support gunners man MK48 Mod 1 7.62mm light machine guns from the helicopter doors while SWCC boat drivers hold the RHIB in position against the current.

The stakes are high because the targets have adapted.

State-backed groups now use dhows with false compartments, drone boats, and concealed IEDs wired to fuel lines. Boarding teams train for every variable — resistant crews, traps, and the risk of the vessel being scuttled mid-operation. It’s a chess match played at 40 knots in the dark.

That same shadow-war tension drives the Eagle series.

Dr. W.C. Ballinger’s background in federal and international law enforcement gives every boarding scene, every maritime takedown, a layer of tactical realism that keeps the pages turning. The Descending Eagle series follows operators facing exactly these kinds of high-stakes global missions — from cartel waters to contested straits.
